The history of COMESA began in December 1994, when it was created to replace the previous Preferential Trade Area (PTA) that existed at the beginning of 1981. COMESA (as defined in the Treaty) were created “organizations that agreed to cooperate in the development of their natural and human resources for the benefit of all their peoples” and, as such, pursue a wide range of objectives whose priorities necessarily include the promotion of peace and security in the region.

The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organization of six partner countries: the Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Uganda, with headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

CAE has 172 million citizens, over 22% of whom are urban residents.
