Passport application checklist

Application is accompanied by:

  1. Documentary evidence of Kenyan citizenship;
  2. 3 current, clear and un-mounted passport size photographs;
  3. Recommendation by a Kenyan national, but not by immediate relatives;
  4. Copy of Recommender’s National ID or passport;
  5. For applicants below the age of 18 years, parents or legal guardians written consent;
  6. For adopted applicants, the original adoption certificate, clearance letter from the children’s department, and/or, the Court ruling or award;
  7. Prescribed processing fee.

Note:

  • The applicant shall submit an application for a passport in person in the prescribed manner i.e. e-passport
  • The Passport Control Officer may require the applicant to produce supplementary information to ascertain the citizenship or nationality of the applicant.

Immigration information in Kenya

The Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government through the Directorate of Immigration and Registration of Persons is responsible for registration of persons,maintenance of an inclusive persons register, management of migration, border control and refugees welfare supervision.
 

 Categories of visas issued by Kenya 

  1. Ordinary Visa: Issued for Single or Multiple entries to persons whose nationalities require visas to enter Kenya.
     
  2. Transit Visa: Issued for periods not exceeding 3 days to persons whose nationalities require visas to enter Kenya and who intend to transit through Kenya to a different destination.
     
  3. Diplomatic Visa: Issued for Single or Multiple entries to holders of Diplomatic passports who are on official duty.
     
  4. Courtesy/ Official Visa: Issued to persons holding Official or Service passports on Official duty and to Ordinary passport holders who are not entitled to Diplomatic visa; but where it is considered by the Director to be desirable on the grounds of international courtesy.
     
  5. East Africa Tourist Visa: This is a joint tourist visa that entitles holders to travel to and within the Republics of Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, for the purpose of tourism.Validity of East Africa Tourist Visa 90 days and Multiple Entry Fee of US$ 100.

Types of passes and requirements


Student Pass

This document issued to person(s) seeking to enter and remain in the country for the purpose of receiving education or training at an educational or training establishment within the country by which he/she has been accepted as a student/pupil.

The institution applying on behalf of the student must be registered as an educational establishment. If the institution is relatively new a copy of registration must be submitted together with the application.


Requirements include:

  1. Cover/forwarding letter from school stating the course and course duration;
  2. Duly filled, signed and stamped application form;
  3. Copy of the passport bio-data and visa pages;
  4. 2 passport size photos;
  5. Commitment letter from parent/legal guardian/sponsor; and
  6. Fees of Ksh 5,000 per year or part thereof.

 

Dependant pass requirements

  1. The applicant must be holder of a valid Kenya entry permit;
  2. Application form dully filled and signed;
  3. Copy of the national passport of the dependant;
  4. 2 passport size photos of the dependant;
  5. Copy of birth or marriage certificate for immediate family members; and
  6. Fees of KShs 5,000.

 

Special passes

A Special Pass is issued to person(s) given specific employment by specific employer for a short duration not exceeding 3 months. The Applicant must have received education or training at an educational or training establishment within the country.

Requirements include:

  1. Duly filled and signed application form;
  2. Copy of the national passport;
  3. 2 passport size photos;
  4. Forwarding letter from institution/applicant;
  5. Clearance from regulatory bodies;
  6. Fees of KShs 15,000 per month or part thereof. Re-entry pass fee of KShs 1,000
