Cross border trade in Zambia

COMESA developed the Simplified Trade Regime (STR), which was launched in 2010 in recognition of the  importance of cross border trade in the region. The STR aims to formalize informal cross border trade (ICBT) by putting in place mechanisms tailored to the trading requirements of small-scale traders based around border areas.

The STR targets small-scale traders importing and/or exporting goods worth US$ 2,000 or less, which are on the common list of eligible products negotiated and agreed by the two neighboring countries.

Cross Border Traders Association (CBTA)

The Cross Border Traders Association (CBTA) is a membership-based organization with about 37,000 members. This association was formed in Zambia in 1999 through the initiative of cross border traders who needed a uniform voice to advocate the removal of trade barriers and promoting a Traders’ Charter. Under the COMESA umbrella, national CBTA Chapters have been formed in other countries such as Malawi, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Congo, Burundi and Kenya.

CBTA has since built working relationships with the Zambian government to implement the Simplified Trade Regime using the Trade Information Desks to complement trade facilitation mechanisms based on bilateral agreements. CBTA offers advice to women and youth entrepreneurs through referral mechanisms to the respective service providers such as Zambia Compulsory Standard Agency (ZCSA) and Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS). This is to ensure that their products meet export quality and standards.

Services for the benefit of women in business

1. National CBTA Gender Committee provides project support for women and youth in business at branch level (e.g. advice on how to run a business).

2. Women cooperatives connect women through networking to encourage practices like saving for their businesses to expand their working capital.

3. Financial literacy is offered to women and youth entrepreneurs in collaboration with some commercial banks and micro-finance institutions.
