Information on exporting from Eritrea

The Economic Macro Policy of Eritrea clearly spells out the national emphasis on export promotion as the only choice toward a sustainable growth and a viable economic development in Eritrea. Based on these objectives, the department of foreign trade promotes, and facilitates international trade. The Ministry of Trade and Industry – Department of Foreign Trade is the major government body that regulates import and export goods and foreign trade licenses.

For every consignment of exports, an export permit is required, and the National Bank of Eritrea regulates the foreign currency aspect of import-export.

Certain products may also require support from relevant regulatory bodies. Export quality and standards are assured by the relevant ministries or authorities for the exported products such as the Eritrean Standard Institution.

Export awareness training

With the support of the organizers of the World Expo 2012 Yeosu - South Korea, and World Expo 2015 Milan - Italy, the Eritrean National Organizing Committee worked closely with the National Women Association of Eritrea to enable women engaged in artisan works to exhibit and sell their products in the above two world expos.  It is expected that same will be done in the upcoming world expos.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry in collaboration with the COMESA Secretariat, has been conducting various training workshops for both the public and private enterprises.  The trainings focus on rules of origin, cross border trade, Simplified Trade Regime, SME development, leather and leather products. The ultimate objective of the training programmes is to strengthen the local enterprises and export promotion.
