Mentorship for women entrepreneurs in Eritrea

Mentorship plays a great role in building the capacity of women beneficiaries and has significant contribution in increasing production and productivity. For mentees, it helps them to feel that they are empowered and productive within their community.

Agricultural Extension Department (AED)

The Agricultural Extension Department (AED) provides training, guidance and improved agricultural technologies to farming communities to promote sustainable agricultural production both in quantity and quality.

Under AED there are three divisions namely;

i) Crop and livestock development division (horticulture production, crop production, skin/hide development, meat and milk production, poultry production, seed, agronomy unit and apiculture units)
ii) Natural resources and irrigation development division (soil and water conservation, dam and diversion structure and irrigation development units)
iii) Plant and animal health  division (migratory and pest unit, plant protection and animal health unit) and
iv) Supporting units (planning, agricultural input supply and information and communication unit). 


How to enroll/how it works

•  No special requirements for the mentee; only readiness to get the service
•  Mentorship lasts one week up to one month, after which mentees are expected to apply what they have been taught
•  Frequency of the mentorship depends up on the women entrepreneurs seeking advice
•  There is backstopping service as experts are always available whenever such services are needed
•  The mentorship service is free of charge and it is all covered through projects of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA)
• The organization provides free consultation in the field and place of work and MoA also provides some credit scheme

Areas covered

AED provides mentorship in all agricultural sectors. It has also a linkage with development partners for securing access to funds and developing their capacity.  
There is a linkage with developing partners such as FAO and UNDP. Additionally, AED creates opportunities for women to contact  these developing partners for example EWAA with FAO (mushroom production).  

Additional services

The organization provides free consultation in the field and place of work and MoA also provides some credit scheme.
