Accessing Finance in Kenya

Most women in Kenya work in the agricultural sector and produce most of the agricultural produce in the country. However, when it comes to accessing credit and other forms of agricultural finance, women’s access drops quickly.

Within the non-agricultural sector of the informal economy, women are also very active in informal cross-border trade, where they are involved in a large volume of the goods traded across borders. Similar to those in the agricultural sector, women in informal cross border trade face several huddles in accessing finance.

Public and private institutions in Kenya have identified women’s challenges in accessing finance and have established various programmes to bridge the gap.

Individual Kilimo Booster: KES 100,000– 3,000,000

Requirements

  • Business must have been in operation at least for 1 year

  • Upfront fee - 4%

Asset Finance Loan

The loan finance people to purchase assets. They include Motor Vehicle Loan, Water Tank Loan and Clean Energy Loan

  • Be a Kenyan Citizen, Age 18+ years

This loan finance people to support their own businesses. They include Nawiri loan, Stawi loan and Shujaa (individual) loan.

Duration

Nawiri loan:3 - 12 months

Stawi loan: 3 - 24 months

Shujaa(Individual) loan: 3 - 36 months

Ceiling

Nawiri loan:KES 5,000– 140,000

Stawi loan: KES100,000– 500,000

Shujaa(Individual): KES 100,000– 3,000,000

Requirements

  • Upfront fee of 4%

  • Loan cycle - Entry loan

  • Business must have been in operation for at least 6 months for Nawiri loan and 1 year for Stawi and Individual loan.
