Empowernment Programmes for Women In Kenya

In Kenya, the population of people living below the poverty line has declined from 46.8% in 2005/06 to 36.1% in 2015/16, according to the 17th edition of the Kenya Economic Update.

Women in the Kenyan contribute significantly to the economy of the country both directly or indirectly and therefore stirring up the economy out of such a high poverty index would need measures put in place for economic empowerment of Kenyan women.

The government of Kenya has established funds and policies such as the 30% procurement allocation for all government tenders so that more women may have an entry chance in such a competitive space. Private Sector Organisations have also set up programmes to empower women.

Equity Group Foundation

Equity Group Foundation [EGF] is a non-profit making organization that was established in 2008 to serve as the social impact arm of Equity Group. Equity Group Foundations Programs are designed to empower girls and women.

 

List of programs provided by Equity Group Foundation

  • EGF’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Pillar- This pillar provides advisory and skill enhancing, training, support and mentoring focused on micro sized entrepreneurs to stimulate business development, growth, and job creation. Out of 11,500 beneficiaries of the Entrepreneurship Training Program, more than 55% are women.

 

  • Financial Knowledge for Africa (FiKA) program-This program connects women, youth, and communities to expert financial literacy training to improve financial capability and individual and household financial security. Through FiKA, EGF has successfully trained over 1 million youthand women, especially women’s investment groups known as Chamas.

 

  • The Hunger Safety Net Program (HSNP)-This program provides access to financial services to the poorest and most vulnerable households in arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya, particularly vulnerable youth and women

 

  • Fanikisha line of credit facilities- to empower women in order to help them expand their businesses, create wealth and employment, and serve as role models to encourage other women entrepreneurs.
