Empowernment Programmes for Women In Kenya

In Kenya, the population of people living below the poverty line has declined from 46.8% in 2005/06 to 36.1% in 2015/16, according to the 17th edition of the Kenya Economic Update.

Women in the Kenyan contribute significantly to the economy of the country both directly or indirectly and therefore stirring up the economy out of such a high poverty index would need measures put in place for economic empowerment of Kenyan women.

The government of Kenya has established funds and policies such as the 30% procurement allocation for all government tenders so that more women may have an entry chance in such a competitive space. Private Sector Organisations have also set up programmes to empower women.

Women Deliver’s Priority Interventions

Deliver for Good Kenya Campaign in Kenya
Women Deliver implements Deliver for Good Kenya Campaign in Kenya. This is a multi-year advocacy campaign bringing together diverse stakeholders to drive progress toward gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kenya. The Deliver for Good Kenya Campaign is an advocacy approach and movement working to catalyze concrete actions that advance gender equality at the community, county, and national levels through evidence-based and coalition-driven advocacy.

Informed by an in-depth policy analysis, coalition partners collectively have defined a series of evidence-based policy recommendations to mobilize gender equality advocates and drive concrete changes for girls and women at the community, county, and national levels. These include:

  1. Implement the National Land Policy’s principles of secure land tenure and equitable access to land in both rural and urban settings in accordance with the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.

  2. Increase government contributions to the Biashara Fund which is a new government program for financial inclusion designed to offer youth, women, and people living with disabilities access to low-interest business loans but with a specific focus on girls and women.

  3. Implement the National Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy at the county level as it relates to establishing comprehensive health services, using the policy’s Implementation Framework.

  4. Effectively implement the constitutionally mandated two-thirds Gender Principle at the county level to ensure women’s political participation at all levels of government.

  5. Strengthen official Kenyan data-collection processes and systems related to gender equality with a specific focus on the Sustainable Development Goals and the four campaign policy priorities to ensure systematic sex and age disaggregated data collection and use.
