The need for information on importing to Kenya arises out of the significant role that international trade plays in economic and social development. It also stems from the importance of having more Kenyans understand and participate in the process effectively.

Kenya imports various products for consumption and for use in manufacturing. With a liberalized economy and globalization of markets, importers in Kenya are expected to be more competitive and innovative in international trade if they are to effectively exploit the opportunities that world markets present.

However, international trade transactions are complex and involve many players, regulations, standards and financial relationships. This complexity means that many potential importers lack adequate knowledge on what needs to be done to transact effectively. It is for this reason they shy away from international trade.

Permits

 

  1. Obtain import permit for meat and meat products (VS13)from the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS)http://www.kilimo.go.ke/for each consignment. A risk assessment is conducted before the application and issuance of an import permit to ensure the consignment meets the outlined requirements.

 

The import permit is processed through the Kenya National TradeNet System (KESWS)

 

  1. Obtain Import Health Certificate from Port Health Serviceshttp://www.health.go.ke/verifying commodities that are for human consumption.

 

  1. Obtain import standardization mark (ISM)from Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)-  This is a must requirement for all imported products intended for sale in the local market. Application for the ISM sticker should be done “once the goods have arrived, and the customs entry has been verified and passed by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)”.
