The Government of Uganda has put in place five programmes to improve empowerment of women:

  • Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP);
  • Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP);
  • Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE); as well as
  • investment in infrastructure that is benefiting women in rural areas.
  • Presidential Initiative of Skilling the Girl child

Stakeholders’ Focus

Stakeholders that include Government, UN Agencies and Civil Society Organisations are jointly working and have set up varied programmes in the areas of:

  • Entrepreneurship development
  •  ICT
  • Career, talent and personal development for the youth
  • Gender responsive governance
  • Mentorship
  • Leadership
  • Equality and decision making; as well as
  • Providing empowerment Funds

Empowerment of women in Uganda

 

According to the UNDP, gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a pre-condition for sustainable development.
For social, economic and environmental sustainability to prevail women and girls need to be provided with:
 
  • Quality education;
  • Health care;
  • Decent work; 
  • Access and ownership rights over property and technology; and 
  • Equal participation in political and economic decision-making processes

About the Council for Economic Empowerment for Women of Africa - Uganda Chapter (CEEWA- U)

The Council for Economic Empowerment for Women of Africa - Uganda Chapter (CEEWA- U) is a registered non-government, not-for-profit and women membership organization working to promote economic empowerment of women in the development process. It was legally registered in 1997 Registration No: S.5914/1947 - 1881).

Its vision is “A Uganda in which women’s economic aspirations, rights and productive potentials are fully recognized and mainstreamed in the framework of equitable and sustainable human development”.

The mission is to promote the economic empowerment of women in the development process through gender disaggregated research, advocacy, training, information dissemination and documentation.

List of services provided by the programme 1. Training in entrepreneurship development & ICT
2. Training in career, talent and personal development for the youth
3. Training in gender responsive governance at national and local government levels.
4. Training in gender equality, leadership, decision making and negotiation
What is needed for a woman to register to the program?
  • Women and youth with leadership responsibilities in both formal and non-formal institutions.

  • Adolescents who are in secondary school education

Does program organise public events that benefit women?
  • Participation in Public Events and serve as resource persons on gender equality and WEE such Celebrations of Women Week

  • Organization of platforms for women to voice their gender concerns and advocate for intervention to address their economic empowerment needs, especially in local governments

  • Organization of public dialogues, facilitated by women leaders, on gender budget advocacy at national and district level
