Legal Aid Support

The efficient and effective delivery of legal aid services enhances equal access to justice for the poor and vulnerable people in any jurisdiction.

Institutions which provide legal aid services

1. Legal Aid Board (LAB) is a statutory body created in 2008 as an independent body mandated to provide legal services to persons whose means are  inadequate. The body provides the following:

    •    Legal representation is offered for both criminal and civil cases
    •    Legal advice to clients

         *Note: Clients are required to pay a nominal fee for consultation and legal aid contribution.

2. National Legal Aid Clinic for Women (NLACW) was created under Act No. 47 Chapter 32 of the Laws of Zambia, as a project under the Women’s Rights Committee (WRC) of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ). The Law Association of Zambia is mandated among others to develop the law as an instrument of social justice which encourages lawyers to serve the people, deal with legal aid and secure representation for the disadvantaged. It provides affordable legal aid to women  and children from marginalized social sectors.

Psycho-social Support Programmes
Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS), in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs working closely with civil society designed some guidelines to help with psycho-social care, setting standards for the service providers on how to manage survivors of Gender-Based Violence.

*Note-Ministry of Community Development and Social Services refers survivors to relevant institutions/organizations available in the districts or community because psycho-social care and support requires multi-sectoral collaboration.

Services provided:
•    Psycho-social counselling to survivors and their families;
•    Follow up care and referral of survivors to other service providers such as Zambia Police, health facilities and One Stop Centres
