Formal female entrepreneurship is a reality in Burkina Faso

21% of women against a rate of 79% for men

16 Aug 2020 - 00:00:00
According to data from the Maison de l'entreprise, in 2015 out of 8,561 formal businesses registered, women owned 1,830 businesses, i.e. a rate of 21% against a rate of 79% for men, which gives a gap of 58 dots. These inequalities impose real costs on society in the form of agricultural production, food security and lost economic growth. They are linked to access to resources such as land, water, inputs, production equipment and credit. Such a situation is due to illiteracy, the absence of information on the market in terms of opportunities, the weak restructuring of the informal sector and the difficulties of access to financial institutions. the promotion of economic activities in favor of women has been placed at the center of government policies and of technical and financial partners. This is how the African Development Bank (AfDB), through the Support Project for the Transformation of the Economy and the Creation of Employment (PATECE), deemed it appropriate to support the modernization and transformation of the economy by supporting entrepreneurship, through: the dissemination of the national strategy for the promotion of female entrepreneurship in order to allow real ownership of the document and the adherence of all actors to its implementation ; the organization of regional and national competitions for women's entrepreneurship in order not only to stimulate the initiatives of women entrepreneurs, but also to magnify and reward those who have distinguished themselves in their fields. These initiatives are in line with axis 2 of the National Economic and Social Development Plan (PNDES), which aims to make women a dynamic player in development and plans to increase the proportion of women business owners among entrepreneurs. from 21% in 2015 to 50% in 2020.
