Business management training in Malawi
Business management refers to all the activities associated with running a business such as controlling, leading, monitoring, organizing and planning in order to accomplish the desired goals and objectives of an enterprise. Good business management is important for creating a cohesive enterprise. Various organizations provide business management training in Malawi which women entrepreneurs can benefit from.
Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute
Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (SMEDI) is a parastatal organization under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MoITT). SMEDI is mandated to promote the development and growth of MSMEs in Malawi to;
(a) create an enabling environment for business growth
(b) to facilitate access to finance
(c) to provide information on markets for MSMEs
(d) provide business skills training
Enrollment for training
SMEDI enrolls participants through three different modes:
o Individuals approach SMEDI for specific training
o In certain circumstances, a designated organization brings their beneficiaries for training at SMEDI
o The third mode is where SMEDI approaches a district office to identify a group of individuals who can benefit from their training programs.
Most training programs take a week to complete.
Events
SMEDI organizes two main events.
- Best SME Awards: Awards businesses that are following the requirements of a business e.g business registration, keeping financial records, tax compliant, consistent production, job creation, and Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) certification
- SMEDI Trade Fair: The first fair of its kind was organized in April 2019. SMEs are supported in displaying their products
