The Gambia Chapter of the West Africa Network for Peace building (WANEP) was established in August 2003. WANEP-The Gambia is a legally registered not-for-profit organization with a membership of 20 civil society organizations working towards strengthening the capacity of peace building practitioners, governmental and non-governmental institutions, and developing conflict prevention networks and mechanisms to promote the culture of peace and advocate for structures and policies that will enhance democratic and socio-economic development.

With funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), WANEP on 11thJuly 2019 launched a programme on women mentorship in leadership and peacebuilding. The event brought together women leaders from different regions in The Gambia.

The project is meant to increase women participation in decision making processes and empower them to become agents of community conflict prevention. The launching ceremony brought together women leaders from different regions in The Gambia.

The mentorship programme targets to increase the number of female aspirants for the 2021- 2023 electoral cycle at regional and community levels that will promote peace, inclusiveness and national ownership. It is also envisaged to increase women participation in peace building for social cohesion since they are key figures in the society and to create a platform at regional level, share their stories and learn from each other.
