Cross Border Trade in Tanzania

The East African Community (EAC) Customs Union and Common Market Protocols provide wider opportunities for cross border trade in the region.

The agreements by the EAC Partner states have established that any product manufactured in the region can be traded within the EAC bloc without being subjected to import or export duty or preferential tariffs.

The EAC partner states have also improved infrastructure in most of borders. In most border posts trade facilitating agencies such as the customs, immigration and certification services are housed under one roof, a concept known as the One Stop Border Post (OSBP).

This has made it is easier to process the important cross border trade documents for consignment clearance within 1-3 days.

In addition, the established procedures, structures and systems at each border provide security, efficiency and effectiveness in consignment clearance.

  • All permit costs are paid where the permit is issued
  • In addition to normal product standards, export/import of fishery products need extra approval by checking the processing and packaging premises (cold rooms, packaging materials, tables and running adequate water) and transport materials.
  • Export of fishery products requires separate permits for different types of fishery products i.e. there is need for different permits for prawns, lobster and fish respectively.

In addition to the above, cross border fish trade requires radiation certificate from the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC)

What disqualifies import/export of livestock and/or fishery products?
