Information Guide

The procedures to follow to obtain a passport in Burundi, the necessary documents depending on the individuals seeking it (adults, children, adopted children) as well as the related costs (mainly for nationals)

A. The procedures for obtaining a passport or laissez-passer are as follows:

  • Present the required file at the reception (See necessary documents in point B )
  • Correctly fill in the form given by the reception,
  • · Submit the form and the documents to the reception to have them signed,
  • Go to the applicant's personal data registration office,
  • Go to the payment counter and receive the secure form,
  • · Perform biometric registration,
  • Study of the file by the authorized authorities,
  • · Production and delivery to the public.

B. Documents required to obtain the Passport or Pass:

B.1 For adults

  • · A photocopy of identity
  • · A complete identity certificate
  • · Proof of residence
  • A passport photo
  • Certificate of service for civil servants

B.2 For children:

  • A passport photo
  • · Excerpt from birth
  • · Certificate of parental authorization
  • Photocopies of the identity cards of the parents of the child
  • School certificate or photocopy of diploma for students

B 3. Fees required :

  • Ordinary passport: 235,000 Bif
  • · Service passport: 135,000 Bif
  • · Diplomatic passport: 135,000 Bif
  • Pass: 30,000fbu
  • CEPGL: 18000fbu

Burundi Immigration Information

The General Commissariat for Migration (CGM ) is one of the General Commissariats of the Inspection of the National Police of Burundi (IGPNB) which offers multiple services to Burundian citizens and foreigners in relation to travel documents and other related services according to the Organic Law of February 20, 2017.

The supervising Ministry is the one in charge of Public Security and Disaster Management.

The Missions of the CGM are:

  • Implement government policy on migration;
  • Control the movements of foreigners on the national territory, in collaboration with the territorial administrations;
  • Monitor and control movements into and out of national territory by land, lake and air;
  • Issue travel documents and visas;
  • Ensure the implementation of Agreements establishing and operating one-stop border posts.

Le Commissariat Général des Migrations (CGM) au Burundi

Le Commissariat Général des Migrations (CGM) est l’un des Commissariats Généraux de l’Inspection de la Police Nationale du Burundi (IGPNB) qui offre des services multiples aux citoyens burundais et aux étrangers vivant au Burundi ou ceux qui y transitent vers d’autres Pays selon la Loi Organique du 20 février 2017.

Ses principales missions sont les suivantes :

1.   Mettre en application la politique du gouvernement en matière des migrations ;

2.   Contrôler les mouvements des étrangers sur le territoire national, en collaboration avec les administrations territoriales ;

3.   Surveiller et contrôler les mouvements d’entrée et de sortie du territoire national par les voies terrestres, lacustres et aériennes ;

4.   Délivrer les documents de voyage et les visas ;

5.   Assurer la mise en œuvre des Accords portant création et exploitation des postes frontières à arrêt unique. 

Le Ministère de tutelle est celui en charge de la Sécurité Publique et de la Gestion des Catastrophes.
