Capacity building for Zambian businesses

Information on a range of training (or coaching) needs critical for women in business.

Businesses require proper management for them to succeed. The basic aspects of business management include planning, leading, organizing and controlling. Various organizations in Zambia provide business training to women entrepreneurs. When women have the knowledge and technical skills it is easier for them to penetrate the business environment/access markets. Provided below are links to the various trainings provided by these organizations.

Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development

The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development has Youth Resource Centres spread across the country where out of school youth (below 35 years) are taught the following courses: Automotive Mechanics, Bee Keeping, Bricklaying and Plastering, Carpentry and Joinery, Computer Studies/ICT, Design, Cutting and Tailoring, Entrepreneurship, Food Production, General Agriculture, General Hospitality, Metal Fabrication and Welding, Power Electrical/Electrical Engineering, Poultry Management, Plumbing, Roof Thatching and many more.

The Ministry draws its mandate from the portfolio functions as outlined in the Government Gazette Notice No. 836 of 2016 which outlines the portfolio functions of the Ministry as follows: 

  1. Child Development;
  2. Child Policy;
  3. Co-ordination of Sports Organizations;
  4. Co-ordination of Youth Organizations;
  5. Sports Development;
  6. Sports Policy;
  7. Street Children;
  8. Youth Entrepreneurship;
  9. Youth Policy; and
  10. Youth Skills Development.

Statutory bodies

  1. National Youth Development Council;
  2. National Sports Council of Zambia; and
  3. Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board.

Importance of coaching young women in business:

The courses are important for capacity building/coaching for young women in business because they are:

  • Gender sensitive; and
  • The courses promote entrepreneurial skills development.

Additional Services Beneficial to Women Entrepreneurs:

Young women interested in agriculture can apply for the youth in agriculture resettlement. Currently, the Ministry has the following resettlement centres:

  1. Mwange Youth Resettlement Centre in Mporosoko district;
  2. Mufumbwe Youth Resettlement Centre in Mufumbwe district; and
  3. Lukanga Youth Resettlement Centre in Mpongwe district.

Events organized:

  • The Ministry organizes the National Youth Week every year and the following activities are undertaken; the official launch of the National Youth Week on ZNBC TV, the National Youth Forum and Young Innovators and Exhibition, Wreath Laying on Youth Day and sport activities.
  • During the National Youth Forum and Young Innovators Exhibition, over 1000 youth from across the country participate in both events. The exhibition attracts various individuals, organizations and companies who exhibit and market their products.  On the other hand, during the Youth Forum, young people participate in Forum discussions on various topical issues affecting them.
  • At the end of the forum and exhibition, some young people receive awards such as laptops for their innovative ICT projects.
