Description | Uweza Foundation works in Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in 2008, Uweza provides Kenyan children and youth with unique opportunities to pursue a path to a better future through the discovery and development of their talents and abilities therefore gaining education and ultimately earning incomes that utilize their own inherent strengths.

Training Programmes | Business and Finance Training-Through the Bright Futures program, Uweza holds business and finance training sessions. The topics of the training include entrepreneurship, generating a business idea, marketing, market research, record keeping, and group savings and loans ideas. Participants are also taught how to create a business plan and business proposal.

Additional services beneficial to women entrepreneurs | Group Savings and Loans-Group members participate in a “merry-go-round” savings scheme, where each group members contributes a small amount every week and then all group members take turns taking the total amount home. Income Generating Activities-Bright Futures members have taken responsibility of cleaning the Uweza Community Center and washing jerseys from Uweza soccer program twice a week, for which they earn a reliable income. They have also started a group liquid soap-making business where they make and sell the soap as a group and share the income. Life Skills Training-Group members participate in a life skills training session once a month at their meetings on topics related to being a young woman and young mother in Kibera, often led by an outside facilitator. Topics of discussion include family planning, child health and nutrition, HIV/AIDS, and the importance of education for children. Group members also participate in computer training sessions at the Uweza center’s computer lab. |
