Empowernment Programmes for Women In Kenya

In Kenya, the population of people living below the poverty line has declined from 46.8% in 2005/06 to 36.1% in 2015/16, according to the 17th edition of the Kenya Economic Update.

Women in the Kenyan contribute significantly to the economy of the country both directly or indirectly and therefore stirring up the economy out of such a high poverty index would need measures put in place for economic empowerment of Kenyan women.

The government of Kenya has established funds and policies such as the 30% procurement allocation for all government tenders so that more women may have an entry chance in such a competitive space. Private Sector Organisations have also set up programmes to empower women.

  • Women Empowerment-Through the Bead workshop, women continue to pass down their traditional beading skills to next generation so that all culture is not lost. With the money they earn through the Bead Workshop, the Samburu women are empowered and allowed the freedom to live their lives how they choose. They can feed and educate their children and pass on the ancient beading traditions to younger women.

  • Education- Samburu Trust has built a small school and the community has worked to create a model for learning, which suits the Samburu people and their nomadic lifestyle. The teachers are chosen from the Samburu community, which enables the children to learn in their own language. The children learn in their mother tongue through storytelling and song, sharing information and passing on knowledge, keeping the children connected to their land and their culture.

  • Healthcare- The Samburu Trust health program aims to uplift and support the Samburu people who live alongside wildlife, while also protecting it.

  • Wildlife- The Samburu Trust aims to expand the team of Warriors and continue to empower them to protect the land and keep migration routes open for both wildlife and pastoralists to reduce conflict between people and wildlife.

  • Water- Using the knowledge of the tribal Elders and their deep understanding of the land and the migratory routes of animals, the Trust has created a network of clean water reservoirs, along the migratory routes, above the river valley to alleviate pressure on the river eco-system.
